Biography

Umm Sahl was born and raised in New Zealand where she spent her adolescent life. She travelled with her family to Turkey in 1982, where she met her first sheikh in Tasawwuf, Ihsan Effendi of Zeytinburnu, Istanbul. She remained his student until his passing away in 1991. She traveled to Egypt in 1993 to study Arabic. After marrying in 1986, she moved with her husband, Sheikh Nuh Ha Mim Keller, to Amman, Jordan.

Umm Sahl studied:

Hanafi Fiqh and ‘Aqida with Sheikh Ahmad al-Jammal;

Hanafi Fiqh and Hadith terminology with Sheikh Shuayb Arnaut; and

Tajweed with Sheikh Ibrahim Rumana.  

For the last 10 years, Umm Sahl has been studying Tafsir, Arabic grammar, Balagha, and Islamic Inheritance with Sheikh ‘Ali Hani. The year following the passing of her first Sheikh, Umm Sahl joined the Shadhili Tariqa of Sheikh Abdur-Rahman ash-Shaghouri in 1992 and was his student until his death in 2004.

At present, Umm Sahl studies and teaches, aids her husband in his translation projects, and helps run the Zawiya of Abul Hasan ash-Shadhili, Amman.
