Is it Halal? The Practical Guide to Food Ingredients
This course will give you a practical introduction to the contemporary issues faced by Muslims in ensuring their food and drink is halal. You shall be introduced to the basic religious principles you need to know to safeguard your diet, and you shall come away knowing what to do: What is safer to avoid, while not haram? What is definitely haram, and must be avoided? The course broadly covers two food classes – meat and non-meat, both of which have witnessed developments in modern industry practices that have created issues of permissibility not immediately evident to the layman. Mufti Sarfraz shall draw on his years of sharia consultancy and advisory experience at the Halal Monitoring Committee (UK), to guide students through the relevant issues pertaining to both food classes.
The course shall cover the rulings related to various types of food and drink:
- Additives including gelatin and E-numbers
- Alcohol including ethanol and vinegar
- Genetically modified foods.
