Entering the Lavatory
It is recorded in the two Sahihs that Anas reported that on entering the lavatory the Messenger of Allah( صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ) used to say:
اَللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْخُبُثِ وَالخَبَآئِثِ
Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min al-khubuthi wa-l-khaba’ith.
(One can say either al-khubuth with a u on the ba or a sukun on it, and the ruling of those who repudiate the sukun is not correct.)
Oh Allah, I seek Your protection from male and female devils.
And we relate from another source that he would say:
بٍسْمِ اَللهِ، اَللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْخُبُثِ وَالخَبَآئِثِ
Bismillah, Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min al-khubuthi wa-l-khaba’ith
In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek Your protection from male and female devils.
We relate from Ibn ‘Umar that when the Messenger of Allah( صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ) entered the lavatory he used to say:
اَللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الرِّجْسِ النَّجِسِ، الخَبِيْثِ المُخْبِث، الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ
Allahumma inni a’udhu bika mina-r-rijsi-n-najis, al-khabithi-l-mukhbith, ash-Shaytani-r-rajim.
Oh Allah, I seek your protection from the filthy, impure, wicked and malicious Shaytan the rejected.
Leaving the Lavatory
When one is leaving the lavatory, he should say:
غُفْرَانَكَ، الْحَمدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الأَذَى وَعَافَانِي
Ghufranak, al-hamdu li-llahi-lladhi adhhaba ‘anni-l-adha wa ‘afani.
I seek Your forgiveness. Praise be to Allah, Who has removed from me impurity and given me good health.
It is recorded in the Sunans of Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi that the Messenger of Allah ( صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ) used to say: “I seek Your forgiveness.” And an-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah narrated the rest.
And we relate from Ibn ‘Umar who reported that when the Messenger of Allah ( صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ) came out of the lavatory he would say:
الْحَمدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي أَذَاقَنِي لَذَّتَهُ، وَأَبْقَى فِيَّ قُوَّتَهُ، وَدَفَعَ عَنِّي أَذَاهُ
Al-hamdu li-llahi-lladhi adhaqani ladhdhatah, wa abqa fiyya quwwatah, wa dafa’a’anni adhah.
Praise be to Allah, Who had let me enjoy its taste, made its strength remain in me and removed from me its harm
Ibn as-Sunni and al-Tabarani narrated it.
