More people are converting to Islam secretly and practicing the religion in private, hidden away from the tyrannical control of Quraysh’s leaders. The Angel Jibril teaches the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم how to perform wudu and pray, and the early Muslims find secret places in which to meet, such as the house of al-Arqam. Soon, however, Allah gives His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم permission to proclaim Islam openly. Threatened by this new religion, the kuffar of Quraysh asked Abu Talib to stop his nephew from spreading Islam any further. Nothing, however, would deter the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, and more people continued to accept Islam.
While this was a great triumph for the Muslims, since they no longer had to hide and prominent figures were becoming Muslim, it was also a very difficult time. Now that they openly proclaimed their faith, the kuffar of Quraysh could identify and harm them. A period of persecution began in which Muslims were imprisoned, tortured, and even killed. During this time, the early believers showed their incredible courage and resilience against anything that befell them. Despite what they suffered, the Muslims kept their faith and persevered, having full trust in Allah.
