An introductory course to the art of playing the daff. This course will give you the chance to receive direct instruction from Ustadh Yusuf Issa and Ustadha Raneem, a trained and experienced Daff master. You will learn and practice five of the best-known and basic daff beats (rhythms) in the Islamic musical tradition.

About the course
In this course, the instructor provides the perfect introduction to the art of the DAFF, an instrument approved as halal according to Islamic Law. You will learn – and be able to apply – the basics of playing the daff and learn 5 main beats to go with it. You can apply these beats to many different nasheeds and bring your mawlids and gatherings to life. This course is for men and youth. We hope to offer a section for women and girls next term.Ā
Course format
- The first lesson: An introduction on how to hold the duff and what the “dumm”, “tak”, “rasha”, and the silent beat are.
- The second lesson: The first beat: “Wahida”, and the second beat reverse “Wahida” and how it is used with faster and slower paced nasheeds
- The third lesson: Learning how to apply the “Baladi” beat to faster and slower nasheeds
- The fourth lesson: Learning how to apply the reverse “Baladi” beat to faster and slower paced nasheeds
- The fifth lesson: How to apply the Ayyoub beat to nasheeds
